Why Meta Ads and Shopify revenue do not match
Meta and Shopify answer different questions. Meta attributes conversions to ad interactions under its rules; Shopify records orders in the store. A useful reconciliation explains the expected gap rather than forcing both systems to report the same number.

01
The systems count different events
Shopify records an order when the commerce event occurs. Meta reports a conversion when it can associate that event with an eligible ad interaction inside the selected attribution setting. One order may be claimed by more than one marketing platform.
View-through attribution, cross-device identity and modeled conversions can increase Meta's number relative to a last-click store report. Missing browser signals can move it in the other direction.
02
Align definitions before comparing totals
Use the same time zone, currency, order status and date basis. Decide whether revenue includes taxes, shipping, discounts, refunds and subscription renewals. Compare the same conversion event and reporting window.
Document the attribution model next to the result. A blended business view and a platform optimization view can both be useful without being numerically identical.
03
Reconcile trends before individual orders
Track the ratio between platform-attributed revenue and store revenue over time. A stable difference may reflect normal attribution logic; a sudden change may indicate tracking, consent, checkout or campaign configuration issues.
Investigate the movement by market, device and campaign before changing budgets. The objective is a reliable decision framework, not a cosmetic match between dashboards.
FAQ
Common questions
Should Meta revenue equal Shopify revenue?
No. Meta reports attributed conversions under its rules, while Shopify records store orders. Align definitions and monitor the gap over time.
What should I check first when the gap changes suddenly?
Check the selected event, attribution setting, time zone, consent and tracking health before changing campaign budgets.
